3D scanning and printing

The purpose of the week is scan and Print in 3D

Creation Under Rhino

When it's done, I exported the file as .STL file (STereoLithography) which is the format used for most of the 3D printer. This file is Too Big for the repository (>40MB), so it 's not possible to view it (I will put it on my github one.)
Here at "La Casemate" the software which pilot the ultimaker printer is Cura.it's an OpenSource software easy to use:
I will use the basic settings:
Layer Height : 0.1 mm
Shell thickness :0.8 mm
Enable retraction : in order to prevent "stringing"(thin threads of plastic in between the printed objects) note if you still have some, you can also reduce the temperature to obtain a plastic less liquid when it comes out of the nozzle.
bottom and top thickness :0.6 mm by default
Fill Density : it change the density inside your object (from empty to full), it will define the strenght of the print, but it will also change the duration of print. I will use 20%.
Print Speed: 50mm/s , Temperature :220degC . I left the default parameters as they are linked and I don't know the relation between them and the effect on the print...
Support : here my object doesn't have overhanging part so I do not need any support, so put none. I just have to place my objet and start printing.

Creation under Antimony

It seems you are using an outdated browser that does not support canvas :-(
My conclusion on this section:
For the first form, the text "Fabacademy 2015" was too small and because the printing head doesn't have a fan to consolidate the print the nozzle deform the previous layer when printing little charactere, so the text was unreadable at the end.
For the second one the characteres used were bigger so the print was much better.

The 3D Printer like ultimaker are fun to produce small plastic parts or small prototype but it's really slow and the result in term of dimension/proportion is not really accurate. I hope I will test the formlabs printer to see if it's more accurate. But in fact I don't think I will need 3D printer for my Project. I would like to see what are the results with 100000$ 3Dprinter, just to compare....

3D Scanning

At "La Casemate" they have a Sense 3DScanner which is easy to use, especially it show you, during the scanning, the part which are not not scanned properly then you just the scan the part again. As I was alone in the fablab this day I fixed the scanner on a small tripod and I rotate myself on chair in front of it. when it's done the file is saved as .PLY which is openable under Rhino. I just export it in stl file in order to show the result. Also because the top of my face was not scanned there was just a flat surface at the top instead of hair cut. So I decided to used a boolean difference with a vertical cone in order transform it in a penholder and use meshmixer to distord the surface.

here 3D view of it:

nice isn't it?

you can find the Rhino 3dm file and stl file on my github repository :github

note : for antimony file : I have only the stl file as the development version at this time crash on my mac each time I tried to save antimony files or export big stl file.
