FablabHouse in Madrid

Digital fabrication gives us the opportunity to create almost anything with any desired shape. The final product can be either small or big, and one demonstration of it is the Fablab House created in the Iaac. The special characteristic about this house is the fact of being part of the Solar Decathlon Competition in Madrid. Some points about the house are the storage and use of solar energy, the interesting concept of personal fabrication, and the idea of creating curved shapes contrary to the rectangular/flat ones we are used to in housing development. Then, as a CAD file, it can be sent from/to any part of the world in order to be fabricated either with a CNC milling machine or a laser cutter.

FabLab BCN helped Iaac not only during the process of manufacturing but also with the notion of taking advantage of the machines to produce things by yourself instead of buying or looking for them in any other place. The innovative structure, as a puzzle, helped students separate the house parts easily; therefore, they can fit in the vehicle and then, shipped to Madrid.

The intense work is now part of Iaac’s students habit since deadline for finishing installing the internal/external structure, solar panels, and complements is June 16th. Some challenges are part of this competition like the changeable hot/rainy/sunny days in Madrid , the condition of the floor level, or the questions from the jury as well.

Despide that, students are working properly, creating a quite interesting and eye-catching structure that everyone is talking about. Finally, the results of the universities proposals will be ready to be visited since June 18th to 27th with a lot of activities for the family and friends regarding the benefits of solar energy, new technologies, innovation, architecture, sustainability, industry, and more.
